A different career every time

The run is a football life

Football Rogue is a player career simulator built with roguelike pressure: imperfect beginnings, limited options, uncertain outcomes and choices that make one career unlike the next.

What “football roguelike” means here

The run is one football life, not one match. It begins with an eight-year-old prospect and persists between sessions until retirement—or until a failed cut or release ends the career earlier.

Imperfect startThree prospects, each with a ceiling and a weakness.
Limited buildTwo core paths maximum; elite growth costs more.
Small match kitOwn many moves, take only three into the night.
Irreversible resultsCuts, contracts and defeats stay in the career record.

Starting again produces a new player and a new route through the same football world. The rules remain readable; the available answers do not line up in the same order.

You do not begin as a blank superstar

A new career gives you a football identity before you spend the first point. Position, childhood route, current strengths and ceilings shape the card; your job is to decide which version of that player is worth pursuing.

A missed youth recommendation can close the cleanest route while leaving a difficult one open. A lower-tier first contract may produce more minutes. An ordinary strength at twelve can become the attribute pair that unlocks a rare match move later.

Constraints create the build

Growth points are finite and high attributes become expensive. A career can select at most two core paths from Finisher, Creator and Engine. Position traits ask you to choose one interpretation of the role. Signature moves require specific attribute pairs rather than a generic high Overall.

Those limits prevent the career from becoming a checklist where every player ends with the same complete skill tree. The build is defined as much by what it cannot do as by what it can. See the full build and trait guide.

The card pool grows, but the hand stays small

You learn football actions through youth, traits and decisive matches. The owned pool becomes a record of the player's history. For a match, however, only three moves make the kit. That turns collection into selection.

The opposition changes which three are valuable. A setup and payoff that cut open a Low Block may struggle when the first touch is attacked by a press. A high-energy runner can dominate an open game and arrive empty when the final action begins. The match system shows these tradeoffs through visible odds.

Risk is stated before the decision

You can usually see what is at stake: attributes, Confidence, Trust, Scouts, Condition, match odds or career access. “Gamble” is not a mystery button; it offers a higher ceiling with a worse miss. A red opponent read means the move is disadvantaged, not disabled.

Uncertainty remains because football outcomes are not promises. The design asks whether the upside is worth the failure in this career, at this club, with this player—not whether you memorised a hidden answer.

A finished career still matters

Retirement closes the player's run and records what the career became: production, honours, reputation and the shape of the build. Legacy challenges give future careers new aims, but they do not sell power or erase the need to make decisions.

That is the replay loop. One player may become a teenage scorer who fades early. Another survives the youth cuts, learns to create and peaks late. The systems stay readable; the combination of player, opportunities and choices changes.

Not a manager game, not a twitch match

You do not control transfers for an entire squad or move eleven players around a tactical board. You also do not dribble with a controller. The perspective stays with one footballer: develop the card, choose the club, fight for Trust, prepare the kit and make the few decisions that define the important night.

That makes a full football career playable in short browser sessions without turning the player into a spreadsheet or the match into an automated cut-scene.
